They are still making these and apparently USING them too. I hated these skates, you had to bind them to your shoes, and if you had lousy shoes, well.........These short ones are mostly used by children.
There are also metal kiddie skates with two paralel blades, you can practically walk on those

Now isn't this the quintessential Dutch picture?
For more snapshots and story from Holland go:

Also go to google.nl and plug in the word "schaatspret" then go look for the pictures which is the link: "afbeeldingen"
This bring back memories.
It hasn't been this cold for a long time.
I do recall skating on flooded tennis courts, local canals, small canals through the polders, and yes, also on our street, when it was covered with a few inches of ice!
At least you were safe there, couldn't fall through.
I don't envy the Dutch their cold weather, but I wish I could strap on my skates once again!
SGMKJ!

Wow. That is a cool picture alright. I still have my ice scates. I display them out in my livingroom as part of my nostalgic memorabilia.
Got the CD already. Super swooft on the mailing!
What is a polder like? I've read about them and understand their purpose, but don't have an idea what they'd actually be like. Seems like it would be a bit terrifying to be so close to "almost-land" that the ocean could rush in on most anytime. But then, maybe you escaped having A-bomb Readiness Drills in the 60's, that created my end-of-the-world angst.
